Five Years of Baby Carriers

Outdoor Equipment

It has been five years since we borrowed our first baby carrier, this was a well worn Macpac Vamoose, we were so impressed with the comfort and quality we went out and bought the smaller brother Macpac Possum. Since our first child came on the scene we have managed to enlarge our family to the sum of five children, all of whom have also ridden in the Possum.
As the last two additions were twins we added to the Possum with a Vaude Jolly Comfort. Again once fitted properly the jolly comfort is a fantastic back carrier.
Unfortunately now that the twins are starting to walk quite well both carriers will be redundant and will probably find themselves on that well known auction site.
I find it quite sad to say goodbye to them as they have given faultless performance, especially the Possum as it has gone to the top of Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell with a small child in.
We have found that the back carrier is one of those “you will never go back products”. We hope that if you already use one or intend to buy one you will feel the same.

Kids Camping Equipment

Kids Camping Equipment

Anyone who fails to appreciate the great leap forward in kids camping gear made in the last 30 years is either too young to remember the bad old stuff or sensible enough to have traded it all for the latest named brands.  Kid camping, even the version in which we have to bring our own kids, is no less wonderful and awful now than it was when we were kids.  What does make an outdoor camping trip exciting is the fact we are all working together. Serve typical camping food, such as hot dogs and beans.  Have traditional camping activities around the “campfire”, such as spooky stories, a sing-along, or games like “duck-duck-goose” and “telephone.  There’s lots of ways to ensure a happy camping experience.

Let cover some straight forward stuff about kids camping equipment, well any camping equipment actually. Most tent come with a rain fly, but if there should be a period of heavy or prolonged rain, even the best of rain flies will not hold back the water. A comfortable sleeping mat or mattress and a warm sleeping bag can be the key to a peaceful night sleep when camping with the kids.   A minimalist method to camping can sometimes be best so plan what you want to take and then reduce by a third and most importantly chose your pitch carefully and fix down well. Simply stuff but so often overlooked.

Consider investing in waterproof clothing if you are going to be hiking or even to wear around camp if the weather is bad as the kids will be miserable if they get wet.  Camping can quickly lose its appeal if the weather is bad so you should always plan ahead and have backup activities. A tarpaulin set up providing a dry playing area is a good idea. Plan some wet weather activities and remember to bring cards, puzzles, colouring books, board games, books and toys from home. Research local area to check out what there is to do if all else fails.

Kid camping, even the version in which we have to bring our own kids, is no less wonderful and awful now than it was when we were kids.  Put kids sleeping bags, and any other gear you treasure into dry bags, garbage bags, or some other water barrier.  Teach your kids good tent etiquette so they don’t crawl all over the tent in their wet boots, or dump a mug of hot chocolate over their sleeping bag and the most important word to remember is ‘enjoy’!

Kids Sleeping Bags.

Kids Sleeping Bags

Kids Sleeping Bags.

Kids Sleeping bags are a delight to children because they represent a break from their traditional sleeping arrangements and a fun night whether it’s a family camping trip, camping in the living room with siblings or a slumber party with friends. Childrens sleeping bags are a good compromise to your child’s changing interest because they are much more affordable than changing all of your childrens bedding, room decorations or clothing and a quality bag is built to withstand many washes and compress nicely into a travel bag.

Good quality sleeping bags provide great comfort, irrespective of the temperature outside. Advanced sleeping bags are very expensive, as they are specially made for people going for mountaineering or hiking so a pre-made quality bag if often the best choice.

Your child will also enjoy having sleeping bags that reflect their latest interests because sleeping bags go with them to friends’ houses and become a fun way for children to express themselves. However, if your child will be camping in cold weather, you must make sure you provide him or her with a sleeping bag appropriate for those conditions. Kids love to cuddle up in their own kids sleeping bag during the dark hours of a long drive.

Kids Outdoor Wear

Kids Outdoor Gear

Kids Outdoor Wear

The best advise for someone looking to invest in kid’s outdoor wear is to always buy well-known and trusted brands such as Berghaus, Marmot, Helly Hansen and columbia to name but a few. There is nothing worse than being out on a holiday, wallking in the hills and your kids outdoor wear starts to fail and literally come apart at the seems. The otehr major advantage to buying a quality brand is that you can be more secure that it will do the job set for it: i.e keep you child dry, warm and comfortable.

Many times people report that their kids outdoor wear lets them down at the most inopportune time and almost always it turns out to be a cheap version of a quality brand. Try to see purchasing kids outdoor wear as an investment in your child. If outdoor activities are important to you and you’re likely to do it more than once or twice than it will prove false economy to buy low quality clothing.

The other major benefit of investing in quality clothing is the qudos of your child being seen in a quality brand. Not in Nike, Adidas type of hype but as a badge that you care for your childs well being.

Kids Ski Hats

Kids Ski Hats

Kids Ski Hats

Kids ski hats or any sort of hat for that is probably one of the most over looked items for keeping warm. With so much heat leaving the head a quality kids ski hat has to be a must for anyone walking in cold conditions, or as the name implies skiing. So why are hats the often forgotten item. Well two reasons really. 1. Children loose more hats than any other item of clothing even gloves and 2. Children can sometimes be adverse to wearing a hat.

Nobody ever said parenting was easy and insisting on a warm ski hat or even a hood on a coat can be one of the kindess things you can do for your child. The beauty of a kids ski hat is that it can so easily be removed when your child gets too warm, that of course is also it’s major downfall.

Child Back Carrier

Back Carriers

Child Back Carrier

Child back carriers have improved over the years as they have become increasingly aerodynamic, more aesthetically pleasing, and made of stronger, more durable material.

Children like to ride high and can sleep on your back, too, but there is no comfortable support for a sleeping child. Keep in mind that a 6-9 month old baby will get tired sooner than you. Child hip-seats are ‘seats’ worn around the parents’ waist which the child then sits on. The parent still needs to hold the child, but the child’s weight is more evenly distributed over the body, saving your back whilst your child still gets a comfortable ride close to you. They can be useful for around the home but far less so when doing serious walking or activity

Child back carriers have come a long way since their infancy a decade ago. Not gone, but supplemented, are the primary-colored nylon rucksacks which made urban trekkers feel clumsy and out of place on path. Child back carriers have a sturdy metal frame and give your baby a good view of the world around him. A backpack can be a useful alternative to a double buggy , particularly if you go on lots of country walks where using a pushchair would give a very bumpy ride.

Three Wheeled Pushchair.

Three Wheeled Buggy

Three Wheeled Pushchair.

Three wheeled pushchairs can be used at many places that are impossible for standard pushchairs to travel on: at the beach, for example, or in muddy fields. Three wheeled pushchairs were originally designed for off-road walking and jogging but have now become increasingly popular in towns and cities. These pushchairs and accessories are ideal for use in town and country. To begin with there are essentially three types of three wheeled pushchairs All Terrain, Joggers and Strollers. To be fair joggers got there first, but the All Terrain Pushchair is a refinement of the jogger for off road use.

Unless you intend to use the pushchair solely for running then you will probably be better off with an All Terrain three wheeled buggy. The softness of the tyre is part of the pushchair ‘suspension’ giving a soft ride and should never be over inflated. Managing the tasks of your normal life can be tricky when you have to push a heavy and often awkward pushchair which does not manoeuvre easily. This problem can be eradicated with all terrain three wheeled pushchairs, which are designed to negotiate a variety of surfaces, so that you and your baby are not restricted in where you go. The unique design of all terrain three wheeled pushchairs means that they can manage rough or uneven ground and can manoeuvre easily over surfaces.

You and your family can take walks together, as the all terrain three wheeled buggy will provide a smooth and comfortable ride for your child, no matter what the roughness of the ground. The design of three wheel pushchairs will enable you to take your child out in the city or countryside, and enjoy a variety of terrains without worrying about rough ground. Some pushchairs do offer both, a lockable front wheel which locks it into position so you can do the distance. The pushchair is one of the all-important things to get right and it may be one of the most expensive, so it should meet all your needs, be safe and practical. The needs of a small baby are very different to those of a toddler, however, many pushchair models are designed to adapt as your child grows. However old your child, the three wheeled pushchair needs to be sturdy, comfortable, waterproof and well insulated for cold weather.

Children’s Sleeping Bags

Kids Sleeping Bags

Childrens sleeping bags are typically made with either synthetic fill or down fill. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, but a down filled sleeping bag is usually the best choice. Sleeping bags are great if you put them in a compression bag. This is basically a stuff sack with straps on the side to cinch down the size. Childrens sleeping bags are generally defined by their shape, of which there are generally considered to be four. Each type has a number of variations in insulation material and temperature rating to choose from.

Childrens sleeping bags are thick, protective “bags” for children to sleep in. In essence, sleeping bags are thick, closeable blankets. Childrens sleeping bags are not just for camping, but can be used at home. If you are young and just getting out on your own, having to use sleeping bags for a while does not mean that you are missing out on comfort while you are sleeping. The most important difference between synthetic and down is their ability to dry if wet.

Kids sleeping bags are recommended for ages 3+ whilst larger childrens sleeping bags are recommended for ages 7+. Kids are great at making a mess. Make sure that the investment you make in a child sleeping bag can withstand the use of your child.

Temperature ratings are not the be all and end all for quality sleeping bags. Various factors influence how warm a person feels inside a sleeping bag. Temperature ratings range from 10 F to 45 F and bags are equipped with a variety of features, including one bag that “grows” with your child.  Temperature ratings are determined by the manufacturer according to the lowest temperature in which the sleeping bag will keep you comfortable. Ratings generally depend on fill, construction and loft.
